We cleaned up Poznan together

Trzy osoby na trawniku zbierają śmieci do worków

Equipped with state-of-the-art technology – grapples – as well as bags and gloves – this was how the Łukasiewicz – Poznań Technological Institute team looked, being one of several hundred teams taking part in the Spring Clean-up campaign organised by Poznań City Hall.

The Institute was assigned an area covering a section along Estkowskiego Street (from the Institute to the Warta River) and part of Ostrów Tumski.

Already at the beginning, the Institute team encountered quite a few surprises. Among other things, they found an alcohol consumption site hidden in the bushes, in which many bottles and… a payment card had been left behind. Or a laptop in two parts that was left on the lawn.

– But the worst were the cigarette butts, hundreds of cigarette butts thrown into the grass, trampled, difficult to pick up. It took us an hour to clean up the section along Estkowskiego Street, says Małgorzata Lamperska from the Communications and Marketing Department. – However, the most interesting and at the same time scariest thing was ahead. Marii Panny Street is a small street running along the Warta River. Here, the cleaning went smoothly, we found, among other things, abandoned bicycle parts and a letter in a tube hidden in a tree (of course, we left it there). We reached the bridge and, when we went under it, a – literally – rubbish pit appeared to our eyes. Bottles, alcohol cans, lots of clothes, bags… It was a challenge! We even carried a section of couch out from under the bridge. Compared to this rubbish dump, the rest of Ostrów Tumski was a piece of cake, she adds.

Five people were involved in the action and collected a total of eight bags of rubbish. – The satisfaction of having done something good is priceless, said Małgorzata Lamperska.

The next Clean Up the World campaign will take place on September 20-22, 2024.
