What is thermometer calibration?
Calibration of thermometers is a process in which the readings of a calibrated thermometer are compared with a reference instrument with known measurement uncertainty, under strictly defined metrological conditions.
The purpose of calibration is to determine the metrological characteristics of the device, to determine the measurement error together with the uncertainty, which is documented in the calibration certificate, while maintaining measurement consistency in the reference chain in accordance with the PN-EN ISO/IEC 17025 standard.
When is it worth calibrating thermometers?
- When the device is used in conditions that are important for safety or quality, e.g., in cold stores, food warehouses, laboratories.
- After any situation that may affect accuracy, e.g., mechanical damage, sudden temperature changes, intensive use, it is worth considering early calibration.
Who uses thermometer calibration?
Calibration of thermometers is beneficial for companies that want to ensure accurate temperature measurements in their processes, especially in industries such as food, pharmaceuticals, research laboratories, and electronics. This obligation stems from quality and hygiene standards such as HACCP, GMP, GLP, and ISO 9001, which require regular inspection and calibration of measuring devices. Calibration helps to meet regulatory and legal requirements, which is important for maintaining production quality and consumer safety.

What does obtaining accreditation mean in practice?
International recognition – these certificates are recognized worldwide.
Proven reliability – the highest quality of our services is confirmed by an independent, external accreditation body.
Process security – you work with a partner with proven procedures, which guarantees reliable results on which you can base your business activities.
Precision – we ensure measurement consistency with national measurement standards. The results refer to national metrological standards.

What does a calibration certificate look like?
The certificate is issued under the EA MLA agreement for calibration and confirms the consistency of measurement results with the units of measurement of the International System of Units (SI).
The calibration certificate is a formal “passport” for your measuring instrument. It provides key information that allows you to make informed decisions and guarantees quality in your company.
What will you find inside?
The most important thing is the table of results, which clearly shows:
Measurement error: how much your device’s reading differs from the precise standard. Thanks to this value, you know whether and how much correction should be taken into account in your measurements.
Measurement uncertainty: an indicator of the quality of the calibration itself. It specifies the range within which the actual error lies.

FAQ
What is accreditation in relation to calibration?
Accreditation is a formal confirmation of the competence and technical capabilities of entities such as laboratories, inspection bodies, and certification bodies. PCA, as the only national accreditation body, operates on the basis of legal regulations and assesses whether a given entity meets the relevant norms and standards. PCA accreditation is proof that an entity has undergone a rigorous assessment and is competent in its field. In Poland, the only institution authorized to grant accreditation is the Polish Center for Accreditation.
What is a statement of compliance?
A statement of conformity is formal information from a laboratory that a test or calibration result meets specified requirements/specifications, developed in accordance with an accepted decision rule and, where applicable, taking into account measurement uncertainty. ILAC G8:09/2019 “Guidelines on Decision Rules and Statements of Conformity” specifies how laboratories should formulate statements of conformity with specifications in relation to test or calibration results, taking into account measurement uncertainty and established decision rules.
How to select calibration points?
The calibration points of a thermometer should refer to its measuring range and be reflected in its actual operating ranges. Thus, if a thermometer with an operating range of -40 °C to 150 °C is used, for example, exclusively to measure the temperature in a dryer with a range of 20 °C to 150 °C, it is worth considering calibration at positive temperatures, e.g., 20 °C, 50 °C, 100 °C, 125 °C, 150 °C. If the thermometer is used exclusively in cold rooms with a range of -30 °C to 0 °C, it is worth considering calibration at temperatures equal to and below 0 degrees, e.g., 0 °C, -10 °C, -20 °C, -30 °C. If we cannot precisely specify the operating conditions of the thermometer, it is worth considering calibrating the thermometer at the lowest temperature of its operating range, at 0 °C, the highest temperature of the range, and at temperature points between the above.
