Building A SustainAble Joint between rurAl and UrbaN Areas Through Circular And Innovative Wood Construction Value Chains – BASAJAUN

In October 2019, the Wood Industry Economics Department has launched implementation of a four-year international project under the Horizon 2020 entitled:

„Building A SustainAble Joint between rurAl and UrbaN Areas Through Circular And Innovative Wood Construction Value Chains” (BASAJAUN)

The main goal of BASAJAUN project is to define a strategy of resource optimization to foster the best use of a specific number of forest hectares that will enable the construction of a medium sized building (16 dwellings with 4 floors which represents a high percentage of buildings in Europe). The whole process must be optimised to maximize consumption of wood products from European forests (solid wood, fibers, veneers, bark, sawdust, etc.). Depending on the tree species and the European region the mentioned surface will range from 5 to 10 hectares. The objective is that the building is mostly based on products and sub-products from these wooden resources.

The specific objective of the technical nature in the project among others is:

to define an innovative constructive system (façade, interior partitions, roofs and structural elements) and an innovative fixing system, that fosters the use of a wide range of wood-based products increasing the building performance,
to define a zero-waste strategy in wood-based construction including the recyclability of its products,
to assess the performance of the demo buildings and fulfil requirements of the Technical Building Code of the France and Finland.

The project also assumes the achievement of socio-economic objectives, mainly such as:

to demonstrate that rural areas can be boosted by the wood construction sector through the development of high added value wood-based products, for applications in building, enabling the construction of buildings and cities with a negative carbon balance,
to analyse the potential of European forests as a sustainable supplier of raw material for wood-based construction,
to create a novel thematic platform to integrate the stakeholders of the wood region with urban areas and promote international open innovation collaboration.

The project is co-financed by the European Union.
The total funding of the project – 10 million €.
Financing tasks carried out by the Institute – 109.4 thousand €.

The project involves 30 partners from 12 countries, mainly European (Spain, Finland, Hungary, France, Sweden, Netherlands, Italy, Portugal, Germany, Poland, Belgium and Chile), and its coordinator is Fundacion Tecnalia Research & Innovation from Spain.
