Area of Wood Technology

Łukasiewicz – PIT carries out R&D works and projects in the area of wood industry and comprehensively deals with the issues of wood processing, its application and the creation of new composites based on the material.

The Institute conducts research aimed at the production of modern materials, improvement of production technology and processing techniques, contributing to the sustainable development of the Polish wood sector and its competitiveness on the international market.

Highly qualified scientific, engineering and technical staff, convenient premises with modern apparatus equipment let us achieve the rank of an excellent scientific and research base for the wood and furniture industry and enable to build a wide range of research and services in the field of:

  • technical and technological issues of wood raw material processing in the entire forest-wood-product chain
  • innovative wood applications in construction, furniture and the wooden packaging industry
  • supervising entities producing wood packaging materials and authorizing them to label these materials in accordance with the FAO/IPPC/ISPM 15 standard (National List of Codes for Producers of Wood Packaging Materials in accordance with the FAO/IPPC/ISPM15 standard)
  • development of new and optimization of known technologies for the production of wood materials and composites from conventional and alternative lignocellulosic raw materials
  • quality assurance of wood-based materials, incl. in the field of hygiene of wood-based panels and technical requirements
  • surface refinement/modification of wood and/or wood-based materials
  • environmental protection, wood protection and flammability and indoor air quality in terms of volatile organic compounds and formaldehyde emissions from wood materials and products
  • circular economy, environmental impact assessments and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)
  • chemical processing of wood and other types of plant biomass
  • innovative solutions in the field of renewable energy obtained from plant biomass, utilization and recycling of wood waste and post-consumer wood
  • economic, organizational and technological aspects of development strategies for the forest-based sector.

An accredited Testing Laboratory Wood, Wood-Based Materials, Packaging, Furniture and Constructions (AB 088 accreditation certificate) operates in Łukasiewicz – PIT. System compliant with the PN-EN ISO 17025: 2018-02 standard has been implemented.  The system is subject to continuous improvement under the supervision of the Polish Center for Accreditation. The scope of accreditation includes the following tests:

  • physical and mechanical
  • chemical
  • furniture
  • air quality
  • preservation and protection of wood and wood-based materials
  • surface
  • flammability
  • solid biofuels.

Łukasiewicz – PIT also includes a certification unit (AC 098 accreditation certificate) for wood industry products, furniture, construction products, and wood materials for compliance with the requirements of the California Air Resources Board (CARB) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Through the implementation of research results in the form of innovative, energy-saving, environmentally beneficial and improving the quality of life of the society materials using both wood raw material and wood waste, experts from Łukasiewicz – Poznań Institute of Technology do their best to create a modern wood sector that meets the requirements of the 21st century society.
